Salut.

Ronline 12:11, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Devanagari is NOT used for Romani.

editisar

Devanagari is NOT used for Romani. The Romany wikipedia is clearly a language planning project, not an encyclopedia. --74.12.164.27 31 martie 2007 02:19 (UTC)

That is an dictate imposed by a sheer majority wanting to push their own agenda. There is a difference between what they propose and the current reality at Romani wiki. They want to forbid a modality used for Romani expression, while currently at rmy.wp there is freedom of expression for all the variants. Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 1 aprilie 2007 09:59 (UTC)
If by "freedom" you mean the freedom to dishonestly push your own agenda, then yes. Very true. This page is a testimony to your dishonesty. --74.12.141.73 10 aprilie 2007 06:29 (UTC)
Romani has no central authority or geographical continuity. This coupled with low percentage of first-language literacy amongst Roma makes it difficult to say which script is preferred. I mention that there is sizeable Devanagri movement atleast amongst educated Roma in my geographic area. Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 10 aprilie 2007 11:26 (UTC)

Proiectul ţărilor lumii

editisar

Ronline 09:31, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Romani ćhib/

editisar

Transcription of Romany sounds

editisar

Dear Desiphral, I saw your querries at Deetrivia's page. I would be more than willing to help you. Hindi is my native language and I also know en:phonetics.

  • The consonant /z/ that you mentioned, as in English zoo, is transcribed in devanagari as ज़, ie , with a dot beneath. But it is very fundamentally wrong transcription, as ज is phonetically /dʒ/ (as in jam); it is a en:palatal consonant, unlike /z/ which is en:alveolar. So /z/ should be transcribed as स, or as स with a dot beneath--this I'll be recommending at Hindi wiki soon.
  • The consonant /x/ exists in Hindi in loanwords. It is written as ख़, ie, with a dot beneath. Using ह (used for /h/) with a dot beneath is wrong--fundamentally wrong.
  • The consonant cluster /ts/ is simply transcribed as त्स . There is no need of त with a dot below.
  • The consonant /ʒ/ ( as in pleasure)indeed does not exists in Hindi. There is no transcription for it. I would, on the basis of linguistics, suggest श with a dot below.

Please mail me on my English userpage for response/further doubts. I am really very happy that people in so far off countries are using the devanagari. It is shamefully becoming redundant in India day by day. People chat in Hindi on Y-Mess using the Roman alphabets. Please continue the good work. BTW, I am admin at Hindi wiki. Regards, en:User:Magicalsaumy.

Since you are an admin here, I'd sugegst you to go to your wiki's Insert toolbox at below each edit page. You can access yours at http://rmy.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Edittools (hopwfully) and edit it to include those symbols. If so requested, I shall send you the entire code of devanagari with the dot variants that I had suggested. en:User:Magicalsaumy.

Hi :-)

Sory, I don't really speak Romani, I just had this one sentence + a couple of words translated. But as far as I understood you welcomed me to the family (thanks :-)) and asked if I'm from Slovakia (Yes, I am :-)) I'm working on this project of translating a description of my village into as many languages as possible, and since there are a lot of Romani in Slovakia, I thought it would be a great shame not to have it in this language :-)))

By the way, thank you very much for translating more of the article. It's greatly appreciated. Although there are many Roma people in SKia, it's actually very very hard to find someone who speaks Romani and is able to translate ;-)

I have transcribed the article into Devanagari. I would like to post it as an alternative to this article -- we'll see how it works out :-)

Take care,

Peter.

Hi :-) For Devanagari I used a program called the "SIL Converter", which can be downloaded here: [5]. It is a bit tricky and confusing, because many letters are transcribed into latin (and especially Slovak Latin) differently (dev "ख़" - Slovak "ch" - SIL "ḵẖ", dev "च" - Slovak "č" - SIL "c", dev "छ" - Slovak "čh" - SIL "ch", dev "ज" - Slovak "dž" - SIL "j", dev "य" - Slovak "j" - SIL "y", dev "श" - Slovak "š" - SIL "ś", dev "श़" - Slovak "ž" - SIL "(doesn't support - have to paste manually)", dev "त्स" - SLovak "c" - SIL "ts", dev "इ" - Slovak "y,i" - SIL "i"). But when you modify the text in this way, the convertor works fine :-) The only problem I have is that I don't know how to transcribe the "ť" adn "ľ" for example in the words "Kašťelis" and "giľutnaris". They sound somewhat like "tj" and "lj" (russian "ть" and "ль", croatian "lj"). I'm pretty sure they're loanwords from Slovak, so there might not be any devanagari letters for them - I was just wondering if you had any ideas how to best transcribe them.
Take care and thanks,
Peter
PS. If you had the time and felt like it, I´d be grateful if you could maybe gradually translate also the other parts of the article. I would then convert them into devanagari :-))
Salut Desiphral,
Thanks a lot again :-) I've added the devanagari transcription. As for the two sounds, they're defined as follows:
"ľ" = palatalized "l" (IPA "lʲ"), approx. "l" in "lurid" (like gli... in Italian or ll in non-yeista Spanish)
"ť" = palatalized "t" (IPA "tʲ"), approx. "t" in "tutor"
More info at Slovak_language.
Mulţumesc :-)
Peter

Ronline 5 august 2006 04:50 (UTC)

OK, now it worked. It is Romani, but certainly sung by a non-speaker because it sounds awkward and unclear. As far I could understand, the verses (only 2 repeated several times) would be these (where are dots, I couldn't understand):
Romani: Me janav ekh rat ..../Chhavo, janes tu, dili baxt anda i rat.
English: I know a night ..../Boy, do you know, wild luck in the night.
BTW what do you know about this song, where did you find it? 1 septembrie 2006 17:58 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you again, but think the word after "Me janav ekh rat" is a conjugation of the word that means dance. It depends which verse, but I hear something like "khe-vaa" or "kai-khe-laan". What are your thoughts? 74.116.142.240 1 octombrie 2006 18:40 (UTC)

The table in en:Romani writing systems, what is the purpose for it? I'm pretty sure we can just check the Devenagari article and learn how each letter is pronounced from there, right?

What do you mean? It is an encyclopaedic article, so it is normal to have a table with correspondences. Do you ask about the legitimacy of showing also Devanagari, since you singled out only this writing system? Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 3 octombrie 2006 12:13 (UTC)
No, I mean, Is this accurate, I know there is more Devanagari than that and I think linking to the the Devanagari page with a more complete table would be better. Unless the Romani Language only uses those letters, in which case could you also add an English pronouncation guide alongside the Romanes words, as in, along with “akana”, the word “want” could be beside it, so that non-speakers can understand the pronounciation of the characters? --FlareNUKE 23 octombrie 2006 20:45 (UTC)
Ok, I see. Indeed, searchig here and there, I didn't find other cross-writing system table at en:wp, but this is probably because there are not available so many articles dealing with more writing systems at once. In fact, I found only en:Mesoamerican writing systems but I don't know if actually there was a contributor there who knew to make a cross-writing system table (that would have been more than welcomed, for the sake of the information provided). I considered it necessary since Romani is not so available in a written form and such a table could bring useful information that might interest the reader. Indeed the understanding of the pronunciation for those who know only Latin might not be easy, so I added the IPA pronunciation. I did not understand what did you intend to say with "akana" and "want" regarding the pronunciation, if you could be more specific. With Devanagari is easier since there is only one variant of a letter for every sound. And there is no Indo-Aryan language that uses all the Devanagari, each one use it partly, some have sounds that others don't have. Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 30 octombrie 2006 19:11 (UTC)
IPA pronounciation is better actually, and also what I meant was akana and want make the same sound. But what you did was better.

Also, I modified the table by adding the IPA template in each IPA part, as some people can't see those characters. --FlareNUKE 5 noiembrie 2006 21:46 (UTC)

Ziua Naţională de Comemorare a Holocaustului

editisar

Salut Alin. Am început un articol despre acest eveniment la en:National Day of Commemorating the Holocaust.

Romani Keyboard

editisar

Here is a proposal for a Devanāgarī keyboard layout for Romani, it only includes the signs used in the en:Romani writing systems article and the vowel diatricts (along with the Nutka and Virama, which aren't really needed since there are keys that already have them with the main letter). It is based on the Hindi layout with modifications, there are no shift states as of yet, I may include for shift states some punctuation and numbers, although I'm not sure what punctuation Romanes Devanāgarī uses. Could you please tell me if this is all correct? I was also going to make a Latin version (but there is no P with a caron). Chitro:DevanagariKeyboard.jpg Also, a side note. What other writing systems are used in Romani? --FlareNUKE 19 noiembrie 2006 17:04 (UTC)

Good initiative! I improved also the table (as this was an older one) adding some long vowells. And there is no need to have त्स in the keyboard as it is just the translation of the Latin letter c (or in other conventions ts, tz) that is made from two sounds: /ts/. So त्स is "त" + "्" + "स". Indeed the letters that use nukta are already in the keyboard, but there might appear in time the necessity of new letters to write non-Romani sounds. As it was the case when introducing Slovakian placenames in Devanagari text at मॊशॊव्त्सि and the palatalized sounds were marked by nukta. Regarding virama, it is used frequently when appear consonants without vowells between them. As for the punctuation it is used "।" (standing for the dot in Latin), "!", "?" to end a sentence.
Also I want to say that I did not include in the table the voiced aspirated consonants (घ/gh, झ/jh, ध/dh, भ/bh), as Romani, like some Punjabi dialects, switched them to the voiceless aspirated. घर/ghǎr (house) in Hindi is खेर/kher in Romani, for example. Some Romani scholars propose to switch every aspirated voiced in Sanskrit-based Indo-Aryan neologisms to voiceless (like भारत/Bharǎt should become फारत/Pharǎt), while others think it is ok to remain as they are. The same for the retroflex consonants (ट ठ ड ढ ण) that switched to apico-dental (त थ द ध न). So, the table, as it is now, represents only the original Romani sounds and I thought not to present the others, as it is nothing clear by now about neologisms. So it is possible that after some time there will be some changes. In fact, I have to say that when I write Romani in Devanagari I use more that those in the list, as there appear neologisms, non-Romani names, also words or expressions from other languages (not necessary Indo-Aryan, ञ-/ɲ/ for example stands for "ñ" in Spanish).
Besides Latin and Devanagari, also Cyrillic and Greek are used. I don't know too much about the viability of Greek. About Cyrillic I heard that there occur also (like in Latin) in some cases more variants to write a sound and I have no idea what solution they use for writing Indo-Aryan specific sounds. I know also that it is mostly used in countries of former Soviet Union. I read somewhere that in Bulgaria, although it has a Cyrillic environment, in the last years Roma abandoned it for Latin.

Saludos.--Jatrobat 12 decembrie 2006 01:13 (UTC)

There must be some problem with the new text of the display. I had a similar problem myself. Try reverting the new text on the upper part of the page and running the script, then add the new text one by one. Its a bit time consuming process though.--Eukesh 29 decembrie 2006 17:56 (UTC)

More Dual-script Wikipediae

editisar

There are also dual-script systems on Wikipediae such as the Chinese one and the Serbian one, along with the Kazakh one. Please look at these also. Please also see this. On the Chinese Wikipedia they have automatic conversion between different Chinese scripts. I'm not sure if this would work with Kashmiri or Romani, but please look at it anyway. Thank you. --Wolf 17:33 11 January 2006

Could you please write a stub http://rmy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w – just a few sentences based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kur%C3%B3w ? Only 3-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 192 languages nad dialects. If you do that, please put interwiki link into English version. If your village/town/city isn't yet on PL wiki, I can do article about it. (I'm first author of requests) Pietras1988 TALK 4 iunie 2007 09:14 (UTC)

OK, I made it at Kurov. One question: what is the grammatical gender in Polish (to apply it also in Romani)? Desiphral-देसीफ्राल 4 iunie 2007 10:52 (UTC)
Very thanks. Your article is perfect. Name "Kurów" is male gender. Pietras1988 TALK 4 iunie 2007 13:13 (UTC)

2 questions more. You wrote it in Vlax Romani? On which dialect of Romani is this wiki? Pietras1988 TALK 4 iunie 2007 16:42 (UTC)
Personally, I write in a standardized form, mostly close to that from Romania, but for these two articles I used also a form of plural I know is used in Czech R.-Slovakia area (I don't know about Poland). This wiki as a whole is Romani, for all the dialects, there are already articles in different dialects and ortographies. That was its presentation from the very beginning, I did not received until now an explanation for giving rmy (which is for Vlax Romani) instead of rom (for generic Romani). Hi! Are you the same Desiphral that I've been working with in the English Wikipedia? I tried to send you an e-mail but when I click on the "e-mail this user" button under the search box in the left-hand column on your user page I get a message that you are not set up to receive e-mail. I am, and I wanted to chat with you about some similar experiences I have had with ignorant editors and how to deal with them effectively.70.120.88.79 29 iunie 2007 09:14 (UTC) - Chicaneo

Hi Desiphral. You have done some translation work on the MediaWiki messages at Betawiki[6]. I was wondering if you were still going to work on them and if we should maybe commit the currently changed messages to Subversion so they will be used everywhere. Please let us know at Process/tasks at Betawiki. Cheers! Siebrand 3 septembrie 2007 13:46 (UTC)
